BioOilSolv is a Calgary-based cleantech company developing advanced renewable solvents and hydrochar solutions through a proprietary thermocatalytic process to decarbonize the energy, agriculture, and carbon markets. Our core technology converts agricultural and forestry residues such as wheat straw into high-value, carbon-negative products that replace fossil-derived chemicals in hard-to-abate sectors. Our renewable solvents serve as drop-in replacements for petrochemical solvents such as toluene, hexane, and NMP, offering 50–70% lower life cycle emissions, safer handling, and high performance. Initially, we are focused on applications in: Oil & Gas Operations: Our solvent is being piloted as a steam additive in SAGD and EOR processes to improve bitumen mobility, reduce steam consumption, and lower GHG intensity without requiring infrastructure changes. It can also be used in asphaltene solubilization, flow assurance, and pipeline cleaning, replacing hazardous and VOC-heavy chemicals currently used in upstream operations. Industrial Cleaning and Degreasing: Our solvent blends are effective in replacing toluene, MEK, and other high-VOC solvents in heavy-duty cleaning, metal degreasing, and maintenance operations, offering a safer, more sustainable solution for industrial users. Electronics and Precision Manufacturing: As a non-toxic alternative to NMP, our solvents show strong potential in microelectronics, battery manufacturing, and resin formulations, helping manufacturers comply with tightening global regulations on solvent toxicity and emissions. As a co-product, our hydrochar improves soil fertility, enhances water retention, and provides long-term carbon sequestration. It serves as a sustainable soil amendment for increasing the crop yield. We have signed a testing agreement with Imperial Oil to evaluate our solvent’s performance and have secured $4.6 million in non-dilutive funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to support pilot-scale production.
