FeX Energy is developing a new class of long-duration energy storage (LDES) to deliver reliable, low-cost, zero-carbon industrial heat. Our technology uses iron - the world’s most abundant energy storage metal - in a reversible thermochemical cycle. When low-cost renewable electricity is available, FeX stores energy by converting iron oxide back into iron using hydrogen. When heat is needed, the iron is oxidized, releasing high-temperature heat without combustion or emissions. The materials are safe, abundant, non-toxic and highly recyclable. FeX is differentiated from conventional batteries and thermal storage by combining high energy density with flexible storage durations from approximately 4 to 100+ hours. Our modular systems are designed primarily for behind-the-meter industrial and commercial applications, where they can shift renewable electricity across hours or days and provide dispatchable heat at temperatures sustained over 500°C. This addresses a major gap in industrial decarbonization. Heat represents a substantial share of global final energy demand, yet much of it remains supplied by fossil fuels because renewable electricity is intermittent and direct electrification alone cannot always economically match continuous industrial operations. FeX is headquartered in Montreal, Canada, and is progressing its technology through pilot-scale demonstration and commercial industrial partnerships. Our vision is to make renewable energy available as reliable heat whenever and wherever industry needs it - using one of the simplest, safest and most abundant materials on Earth: iron.
